Stone docks like this one were the working heart of the Imperial Naval Arsenal at Constantinople, where the Ottoman navy built, repaired and fitted out its warships on the Golden Horn. The Abdullah Frères studio, a firm of court photographers in Istanbul, made this albumen print for an album of naval sites assembled between 1880 and 1893, during the reign of Sultan Abdul-Hamid II. The album was made for an Ottoman audience, which is why its captions appear in both Ottoman Turkish and English. Its careful attention to masonry, quays and the dock's layout makes it useful evidence of how the Arsenal presented its industrial strength at the time.
