Taken on the front deck of the Imperial Yacht Sultaniye, this albumen print records the sailors and working spaces of an Ottoman royal vessel rather than its ornamented interior. It was made in Constantinople by Abdullah Frères, the studio of the Abdullah brothers, Armenian-born photographers who held court patronage and sold their views widely in Europe. The print comes from an album assembled for Sultan Abdul Hamid II, who reigned from 1876 to 1909 and took a keen interest in photography. The album's other pages cover naval personnel and lifesaving stations along the Black Sea.
