A bugler in the uniform of a naval sergeant stands for the camera in this portrait, one of the entries in an album of imperial frigates and naval personnel compiled in Istanbul. The print was made by Abdullah Frères, a Constantinople studio whose members were known for photographing the Ottoman court and its officials. Bugles were used aboard warships to pass signals for drills, watch changes and ceremonies, so the instrument points to the daily routine of the Ottoman navy. The albumen print process, which used egg white to bind the image to paper, was standard for studio portraits in this period. The album later became part of the Abdul-Hamid II Collection at the Library of Congress.
