The Sultaniye was an imperial yacht of Sultan Abdul Hamid II, and this print shows it as a formal portrait of a royal vessel at Constantinople. Abdullah Frères, a leading Istanbul studio, made the photograph sometime between 1880 and 1893, during the sultan's long reign. The caption appears in both Ottoman Turkish and French, a sign that such images were meant for an international audience as well as the court. The print comes from an album assembled for Abdul Hamid II, now held by the Library of Congress, where it sits among views of Ottoman warships and naval life.
