Plymouth, Massachusetts, is best known for Plymouth Rock, but this print turns to a working building: the shoe factory of Frederick Jones & Co. Shoemaking was one of the leading industries of eastern Massachusetts in the nineteenth century, and factories like this one supplied footwear to a growing national market. The record gives no date, and the name Bufford on the shelflist card suggests a link to the Boston lithography shop of J.H. Bufford, which made many business views of the period. Manufacturers often commissioned such images to show off their premises, so the picture is as much a statement of local industry as a view of a building.
