This stereograph shows a sugar mill on St. Croix, the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, at a time when sugar still shaped the island's economy and landscape. The card was published by the Keystone View Company, a major American maker of stereoscopic views, and was meant to be seen through a stereoscope, which gave the mill buildings and surrounding ground a sense of depth. St. Croix was then a Danish colony, and it did not pass to the United States until 1917. The record's caption data is unverified, so the exact estate and date should be treated with some caution.
