Breaker boys at the Kohinor mine in Shenandoah City, Pennsylvania, are the subject of this cyanotype, a process that produces the deep blue tone seen here. The boys worked in the breaker, a large wooden structure where mined anthracite was crushed and sorted, picking out slate and other impurities by hand as coal rushed past them. The work was dusty, loud, and dangerous, and many of the workers were children. This print is part of the Frances Benjamin Johnston Collection, and images like it helped show the public the conditions of anthracite mining in the 1890s.
