The Union Mine at Copperopolis in Calaveras County stands out among scenic views for its focus on copper extraction rather than scenery alone. Copper ore was found in the hills near the settlement in the early 1860s, and the town took its name from the metal that drew miners there. This print is one half of a stereographic pair from the *Gems of California Scenery* series, so the Library holds only one lens view. Parlor stereoscopes let viewers see such mining sites in apparent depth, bringing distant industry into middle-class homes.
