Brown's Flat, a mining camp in Tuolumne County in California's Sierra Nevada foothills, is the setting for this view of work inside a mine. Placer mining drew large numbers of prospectors to the county during the Gold Rush, and by the mid-1860s, when this card was published as number 974 in the Gems of California series, mining remained the region's main industry. The Library holds only one half of the original stereographic pair, so the image survives as a single view, and its caption details come from an old card that has not been independently verified.
