Breaker boys at the Kohinor mine in Shenandoah City, Pennsylvania, worked over chutes in the coal breaker, picking slate and stone out of anthracite as it rushed past. The work was dusty, deafening and dangerous, and boys often as young as 8 or 10 suffered cut hands and damaged lungs. This 1891 cyanotype, a blue-toned contact print, belongs to the Frances Benjamin Johnston Collection at the Library of Congress. Photographs of child labor in the coal region like this one later helped reformers make their case for protective laws.
