A loaded train of coal cars sits on the grade of a gravity incline at a mine near Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, where the slope itself did much of the work. Gravity inclines used the weight of descending loaded cars, often on a cable, to haul empty cars back up the hill, a practical solution in a region where coal was dug from hillsides and river bluffs. The Pittsburgh district was among the country's leading bituminous coal producers in these years, and its mine railways carried coal to river barges and rail yards. Published as a stereograph by the H.C. White Co. around 1907, the card was made for viewing through a stereoscope at home, which is why it shows the mine's machinery in such close, dimensional detail.
