Mules and horses loaded with goods, moving in a long file across open country, make up this wood engraving of a pack train bound for Santa Fé in 1820. It appeared in Henry Inman's *The Old Santa Fé Trail* in 1897, facing page 57, so it is a later rendering of earlier travel rather than a picture made on the road. Pack animals were a common way to move goods before heavy wagons carried most of the trade, and commerce along the route grew after Mexico won independence in 1821. The engraving shows how such caravans were organized and equipped.
