The Siege of Yorktown in 1862 was the first major Union campaign of the Civil War's Peninsula Campaign, and this view shows the heavy artillery Union forces hauled into position to batter the Confederate works. Siege guns of this size could not move on ordinary roads, so the army relied on railroad cars and specially built carriages to bring them forward. The photograph captures how much logistics lay behind the battle, with the guns and their transport dwarfing the men who worked them. The caption card gives no date, so the scene is best placed within the spring 1862 operation.
