A train bound for Atlin, a town on the shore of Atlin Lake in northwestern British Columbia, places this picture in a remote corner of the Klondike-era North. Gold discoveries in the Atlin district in 1898 drew a rush of prospectors, and getting supplies and people into the area was slow and costly, so a railcar and locomotive heading there would have been a notable sight. The photograph is part of the Frank and Frances Carpenter collection, assembled by the husband-and-wife travel writers who documented places and people far from their home. The catalog also tags the image under Alaska, a reminder of how loosely the region's geography was often described at the time.
