Cadets and women share the lawn in this view of the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland, a scene of campus life rather than drill or ships. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a Washington photographer, documented a range of subjects in this period, and the caption cards for this print list topics from boats and artillery to commencement. Founded in 1845 to train officers for the Navy, the Academy was a place where military routine and everyday social life existed side by side on the same grounds. The date of about 1902 is tentative, carried over from the original card.
