Women in period dress gather on the waterfront in this lithograph, A visit to the wharf, Nantucket, which places a social outing beside a working harbor. Nantucket built much of its nineteenth-century prosperity on whaling, and its wharves were where oil and cargo came ashore, so a leisurely visit there shows how the island's maritime life intersected with town life. E.W. Jenney is credited as the delineator. The catalog record carries a 1930 date, but its subject headings place the scene between 1850 and 1880, the decades after the island's whaling heyday.
