The picture shows the last Redondo Beach residents of Japanese ancestry leaving San Pedro by truck in April 1942, as their community was emptied out during the wartime removal. After Executive Order 9066 was signed in February 1942, the Army moved people of Japanese ancestry from the West Coast to inland camps administered by the War Relocation Authority, which documented the process with its own photographers. The print belongs to the Farm Security Administration and Office of War Information collection at the Library of Congress, and it captures the final, orderly stage of a removal that uprooted families and businesses across coastal California.
