Avalon Bay on Santa Catalina Island is the setting here, at a town that drew steamer passengers from Los Angeles as a seaside resort in the early 1900s. The picture is a stereograph card, a pair of nearly identical images meant to be viewed through a hand viewer so the scene appeared to have depth. The H.C. White Co. of North Bennington, Vermont, produced many such cards, which households bought as a form of armchair travel. Beach scenes like this one show how visitors spent their leisure by the water during that era.
