Lying on the sand rather than skimming the water, these hydroplanes show the craft out of their element, with their hulls and floats visible in Joseph Pennell's 1917 lithograph. Pennell, a Philadelphia-born artist who worked in both the United States and Britain, was known for drawing machines, ships, and industrial scenes with careful attention to their construction. The year 1917 was the first full year of American involvement in the First World War, when seaplanes and fast motorboats were drawing wide public interest. Pennell's signature on the stone and in pencil, along with the edition of 50, marks this as a deliberately made print rather than a casual sketch.
