Shore hunting for snipe and other small shorebirds was a favorite pastime along the Atlantic coast, and this 1869 lithograph shows sportsmen working the sand for birds prized as game. The New York firm of Currier & Ives produced hundreds of sporting and rural scenes for a public eager for outdoor subjects, and prints like this one hung in parlors, taverns, and sporting rooms. Today the image offers a window onto recreational gunning before federal laws such as the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 curbed the hunting of shorebirds.
