This engraving, titled "The arrival," shows a Nantucket wharf and was printed in the August 1873 issue of *Scribner's Monthly*, a popular American illustrated magazine. By then the island's economy had shifted sharply, since its once-busy whaling fleet had largely disappeared and the last whaler sailed in 1869. Magazines of the period often used engravings like this to introduce coastal towns to readers who would never visit them. The title points to a moment of arrival at the dock, a reminder of how central the harbor was to the island's life.
