Here the Fourth of July celebration centers on a fire balloon, a paper envelope lifted by heat from a small flame, being sent up into the sky. Charles Stanley Reinhart, who drew regularly for *Harper's Weekly*, made the design, and it appeared in the magazine's July 8, 1871 issue on page 617. Wood engravings like this one turned drawings into printed pages for a large readership, and fire balloons were a familiar part of summer festivities in the period, often launched after dark while crowds looked on.
