Two men stand before the Goodyear VIII, a gas balloon whose envelope and basket fill most of the frame. Ward T. Van Orman, the pilot, was an Akron, Ohio, balloonist tied to the Goodyear company, which built and flew lighter-than-air craft during the 1920s and 1930s. Allen MacCracken, the aide, is shown alongside him in the crew's preparation for flight. Pictures like this one record how balloon racing was organized before airships and airplanes took over long-distance air travel, and the crew portrait gives a sense of the teamwork the sport required.
