Here the Kin-der-Kids strip centers on a rescue that goes wrong, as the balloon sent out on the Jimjam relief expedition is lost, and the page carries the melancholy mood its title promises. Lyonel Feininger drew the strip for the Chicago Sunday Tribune, where he worked as a newspaper cartoonist years before he became known as a painter. Balloons and airships were a popular subject in the early 1900s, and this color Sunday page shows how the newspaper comic used that fascination for storytelling. The print was later included in a Feininger exhibition at the Hamburger Kunsthalle in 2003 and 2004.
