Brigadier General George Van Horn Moseley appears here in a head-and-shoulders view, facing the camera directly. The portrait was made by Underwood & Underwood, a firm that supplied press and commercial photographs of public figures in the early twentieth century, and it dates from between 1921 and 1923, a period when officers of the postwar Army were often photographed for newspapers and magazines. Moseley's later career, including his controversial political activity in the 1930s, makes this early image a useful record of how an army officer of the era presented himself to the public.
