Here the Cuban-born bandleader Chico O'Farrill faces the camera squarely, his head and shoulders filling a plain portrait. Born in Havana in 1921, O'Farrill moved to New York in the late 1940s and became one of the key arrangers linking Cuban rhythms with American big-band jazz, writing charts for players such as Dizzy Gillespie. Around 1950, when this picture was made, he was building a reputation as a composer and conductor. The frontal pose and direct gaze suit a musician whose work centered on shaping the sound of a full ensemble.
