Few portraits of the period show a Native leader as directly as this head-and-shoulders study of Washakie, whom the record dates to about 1804 through 1900. The catalog describes it as a reproduction of an artwork, so it reflects how a painted likeness was copied and circulated in print at the time. Washakie led the Eastern Shoshone for decades and signed the Fort Bridger Treaty of 1868, which established a reservation in what is now Wyoming. Images like this one shaped how many non-Native viewers pictured western tribal leaders.
