This view looks forward along the deck of RELIANCE, the sailing yacht built in 1903 by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company in Bristol, Rhode Island. The boat was designed to defend the America's Cup that year against the British challenger Shamrock III, and it won the series. Her large sail area and long, lean hull made her one of the most closely watched racing yachts of her day. The photograph's view along the deck shows the working layout of a large racing cutter at the turn of the century.
