The sailing yacht RELIANCE, shown here as her crew furls the jib, was a racing sloop built in 1903 at the Herreshoff yard in Bristol, Rhode Island. That year she was built to defend the America's Cup against the British challenger Shamrock III, and she won the series. Her great size and tall rig made her one of the most closely watched yachts of the era, and photographs like this one recorded the hard, detailed work of handling sails aboard such large racing craft. The jib, the small headsail at the bow, had to be brought down and tied neatly between races, a routine task that showed how much labor a professional crew put into each run.
