Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club, in Boothbay on Maine's midcoast, is the subject of this view of a working waterfront where sailing and summer visitors shared the shoreline. The caption card records no date, but yacht clubs along this coast generally grew up alongside the summer colonies and resort hotels that drew wealthy families to the harbor from the late 1800s onward. The sheltered anchorage made Boothbay Harbor a natural base for pleasure boats, so the club reflects how recreational sailing shaped village life. The boats and buildings in the frame are the best clues to when it was taken.
