Rather than a battle scene, this drawing shows the earthen shelters, known as bomb proofs, that soldiers dug at Cold Harbor, Virginia, in June 1864. Troops built them by heaping earth over timber so that men could rest and wait out artillery fire. The fighting there, part of Ulysses S. Grant's Overland Campaign, had settled into trench warfare by early June, which made such fortifications a daily necessity. The drawing came to the Library of Congress as a gift from J. P. Morgan in 1919 and belongs to its Civil War drawing collection.
