Few scenes from the Civil War were as stark as this burial party at work on the Cold Harbor battlefield in Virginia. The fighting there in late May and early June 1864, during Ulysses S. Grant's campaign toward Richmond, left many Union and Confederate dead on open ground for days. The record dates the view to April 1865 and credits Alexander Gardner, with the negative attributed to J. Reekie. Gardner later published it in his *Photographic Sketch Book of the War*, which brought images of battlefield dead to a public that could not see the front for itself.
