Soldiers at Cold Harbor, Virginia, are shown digging in and piling up breastworks, the earthen defenses that came to define the fighting there in June 1864. The battle followed Ulysses S. Grant's push toward Richmond during the Overland Campaign. After a costly Union assault on June 3 failed, both armies dug extensive trench lines that turned the field into a siege-style standoff, a pattern that would soon repeat at Petersburg. The drawing is one of the Civil War drawings given to the Library of Congress by J.P. Morgan in 1919.
