The lithograph shows HMS *Victoria*, the flagship of Britain's Mediterranean Fleet, going down off Tripoli on the coast of the Ottoman province of Syria (today's northern Lebanon) on June 22, 1893. The ship was rammed by its fleet mate HMS *Camperdown* during a squadron maneuver, and the sinking claimed more than 350 lives, including that of Vice Admiral Sir George Tryon. New York publisher Currier & Ives issued the hand-colored print that same year, bringing a distant naval disaster to American viewers as a dramatic, widely circulated news image.
