The print's subject is a cross-section of the *Brookes*, a British slave ship, with its hold drawn as if the deck had been cut away. Each rows of bodies is laid out in tight, measured ranks, which turns the vessel's interior into a plan that can be read at a glance. The title places it under the Regulated Slave Trade Act of 1788, the law that set limits on how many enslaved people a ship could carry relative to its tonnage. Abolitionists circulated images like this one to show Parliament and the public what those legal limits looked like in practice, making the print a lasting piece of evidence in the campaign against the trade.
