Bananas arriving at the New Orleans docks were moved off the ships by a mechanical conveyor, a sight that set this scene apart from the hand-loaded cargo common on the waterfront. New Orleans was among the busiest U.S. ports for the fruit in the early 1900s, when steamships carried it north from Central America and the Caribbean. Speed mattered because bananas ripen quickly, so quick unloading and rail transfer were essential. The photograph comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for documenting American cities, industries and scenery in the years around 1911.
