Few pictures on this board show a warship at anchor, and this half of a stereograph records the Lancaster, identified in its caption as a U.S. Navy flagship. The card is dated 1866 and carries the number 327 in a series called *Gems of California Scenery*, a commercial line of stereo views sold to a public that enjoyed exploring far-off places through a viewer. Only one half of the original pair survives in the Library's holdings, so the depth effect the maker intended cannot be seen here. The caption information is unverified, so treat the ship's role as a recorded claim rather than settled fact.
