Few views of the Union Navy's ironclads were made on the Pacific coast, which is what sets this stereograph apart. It shows the monitor *Camanche* at the U.S. Navy Yard on Mare Island, seen from the town of Vallejo across the strait in Solano County. The ship was one of the monitors built in San Francisco during the Civil War and shipped in sections around Cape Horn, so it arrived too late to see combat. The print is one half of a stereographic pair from the *Gems of California Scenery* series, and its caption information is recorded as unverified, so the picture is best read as a glimpse of the navy yard in the years just after the war.
