Few navy yards could operate safely without a secure place to store gunpowder, and this sheet presents Benjamin Henry Latrobe's proposed powder magazine for the Navy Department's yard at Gosport, on the Elizabeth River in Portsmouth, Virginia. Dated July 31, 1809, and inscribed by Latrobe as Surveyor of the Public Buildings, it shows elevation, section, and plan views and is labeled as the second design. A later note from January 1873 says it repeats the same design at reduced dimensions. The drawing offers a clear look at how federal architects planned explosives storage at the young navy yards.
