Pennsylvania was one of the largest sailing warships the United States ever planned, a three-decker designed to carry 140 guns as a flagship of the line. Her name and rated armament set her apart from the smaller frigates and sloops that filled Nathaniel Currier's catalog of ship prints. Published around 1846, the hand-colored lithograph reflects the nation's appetite in those years for images of its navy, when wooden warships still represented the peak of naval power. Currier's prints of this kind were popular with sailors' families and with shipping men, who valued the detailed rigging and the sense of a vessel shown at full sail.
