The title sets this print apart: it presents the Three Brothers as a 2,972-ton vessel and "the largest sailing ship in the world." Currier & Ives, a New York firm that sold inexpensive lithographs of ships, trains and current events to a wide public, issued it in 1875. By then steamships were steadily taking over long-distance trade, so a huge sailing ship was both a source of pride and a kind of wonder. The subject heading "Curiosities & wonders" suggests the publisher saw the vessel as a spectacle as much as a ship.
