Vasco da Gama's ship sails beneath a host of gods gathered in the sky above its rigging, a detail that sets this watercolor apart from ordinary views of ships. It illustrates Luís de Camões's epic *Os Lusíadas*, first published in 1572, which celebrates the Portuguese voyages to India, including Gama's route around Africa in 1497 to 1499. Camões gave the classical deities a direct role in the story, with Venus and her allies guiding the mariners, so the artist placed them over the ship rather than in the sea below. The work dates to about 1880, around the tricentenary of the poet's death, and it was made by E. Casanova.
