The launch of the ship of war *Pennsylvania* on August 21, 1837, drew crowds to the navy yard as the young republic's navy showed off its largest vessel. Built as a 120-gun ship of the line, she was meant to be the flagship of the American fleet and one of the biggest wooden warships afloat. Prints like this one, often issued to mark such events, captured the crowded shore, the hull leaving the ways, and the sheer scale of the ship that spectators watched slide into the water.
