The paddle steamer *Atlantic* was one of the Collins Line ships, which carried the federal mail contract between New York and Liverpool, and the title's "U.S. Mail" marks that role. Nathaniel Currier published this lithograph in New York around 1850, when his shop was producing many views of ocean steamers for a public fascinated by the new fleets. The Collins Line's rivalry with Britain's Cunard Line kept the *Atlantic* in American newspapers, and the print captures the national pride attached to these ships.
