Human remains lie scattered across the ground at Gaines' Mill, near Richmond, Virginia, where Confederate forces under Robert E. Lee defeated Union troops on June 27, 1862, during the Seven Days Battles. The fighting there was among the bloodiest of that campaign, and many of the dead were left unburied for long stretches after the armies moved on. Photographers who followed the armies in the war's early years recorded scenes like this one, and images of unburied soldiers shocked northern audiences, who saw the human cost of the war more directly than many had before.
