A long, narrow sheet of brown paper, only about 8 by 51 centimeters, shows a Confederate stockade of sharpened stakes and a covered way at Wynns Mill, outside Yorktown, Virginia. Alfred R. Waud, a staff artist who sent sketches from the field for Harper's Weekly, drew it in April 1862 during the Peninsula Campaign, when Union forces under McClellan were advancing up the peninsula toward Yorktown. The Confederate line along the Warwick River, where Wynns Mill stood, was among the defenses the Union army had to probe and breach. The drawing appeared in the magazine's May 10, 1862 issue, so readers saw the rebel works within weeks of the sketch.
