This view shows a sleeping compartment, labeled Room B, aboard the Mayflower, the steam yacht the federal government kept for presidential travel along the coast and on the Potomac. The photograph was taken on July 1, 1920, during Woodrow Wilson's final year in office, when the ship still served as a floating retreat for the White House. It comes from the National Photo Company Collection, a commercial Washington studio that documented the capital and its institutions in the early twentieth century. Its plain, well-lit interior offers a rare look at the working comforts of a vessel built for official travel rather than display.
