The Thistle was a cutter yacht built on the Clyde at Glasgow, Scotland, and this print presents it as a ship of that Scottish yard. Its name and build point to the Clyde's long reputation for fine yacht construction in the 1880s. In 1887 the Thistle sailed as a British challenger for the America's Cup, the most watched yacht race of the day, which made it a subject of wide public interest in the United States. Currier & Ives, the New York firm known for inexpensive chromolithographs of American life, issued this color print to satisfy that appetite for pictures of famous vessels.
