The cutter *Thistle*, designed by G. L. Watson and built by D. W. Henderson & Co. of Glasgow for owner James Bell, is the subject of this 1887 hand-colored lithograph published by Currier & Ives in New York. In 1887 the Scottish yacht crossed the Atlantic to challenge for the America's Cup, and it lost to the American defender *Volunteer*. The print reflects the public interest that transatlantic yacht racing drew in the 1880s, when American publishers regularly produced colorful portraits of famous vessels for a wide market.
