The 8th Ohio Volunteer Infantry's departure from Camp Alger, a training camp in northern Virginia outside Washington, is what sets this stereograph apart from other views of the 1898 volunteer regiments. The camp was built that spring for state volunteers preparing for the Spanish-American War, and crowded camps like this one struggled with poor sanitation, and typhoid and other diseases spread among the troops. Many regiments trained there expecting to sail for Cuba, though the war ended in August 1898 before most of them went overseas. The card's caption and date are recorded from older notes, so the exact moment shown is not confirmed.
